The Seed Rests in the Soil

Potential remains intact after arrival and before germination.

The seed has completed TRANSITION by becoming established in habitat. It may now remain physiologically dormant, or it may be non-dormant but quiescent because environmental requirements for germination are not yet satisfied.

Rest Can Have More Than One Cause

An intact seed in soil is not automatically a dormant seed. The outward result can look similar while the underlying biological reason is different.

Dormancy Can Be Internal

A viable dormant seed can remain unable to germinate even when otherwise favorable environmental conditions are available until the relevant dormancy mechanism is relieved.

Quiescence Can Be Environmental

A non-dormant seed may remain inactive because water, temperature, oxygen, light or another external requirement is not yet suitable.

Viability Can Be Preserved

The seed coat, stored reserves and low activity can help maintain the embryo through a period in which visible growth has not begun.

The PLANT perspective is the clearest literal example of dormancy in the five-stage family, while still requiring a distinction between true dormancy and ordinary quiescence.

ARRIVED The seed is established in habitat

Dispersal has ended. The seed is now held in the local substrate rather than continuing to travel.

PRESERVED The embryo remains intact

Visible growth is absent while the seed maintains the biological potential for later germination.

THRESHOLD Internal and external requirements must align

Dormancy release and suitable germination conditions determine when the next phase can begin.

SCIENTIFIC DISTINCTION

Dormancy and Quiescence Are Not the Same

True seed dormancy involves internal controls that prevent germination even when otherwise favorable external conditions are present. Dormancy mechanisms and requirements vary substantially among species.

Quiescence describes a viable, non-dormant seed that remains inactive because an external requirement is missing. Both can appear as an intact resting seed, so the page keeps the scientific distinction explicit.

DORMANCY ends at the threshold of renewed germination activity. Radicle emergence and visible growth belong to AWAKEN rather than being completed here.

NEXT — AWAKEN The Seed Germinates

AWAKEN begins as germination processes reactivate and the seed moves toward visible radicle emergence and growth.

Waiting Can Protect Continuation

The seed makes the DORMANCY principle tangible. Acting immediately is not always the best path to continuation; waiting can protect life from emerging into conditions that cannot sustain it.

In MICROBA’s framework, the seed remains at rest until the relevant internal and environmental threshold is crossed. Only then does the story move into AWAKEN.
